Any HTML experts out there? I have been working on a problem for over an hour and cannot fix it! On my Home Page I have two tables. The first table has titles that are in an Arial font, and the second table has titles that are in Times New Roman. I did not enter any code for font type - just put in two tables. No matter what I do the second table is always in Times New Roman.

StoresOnline could not answer my question. Does anyone have any ideas about why this may be happening and maybe a solution to fix it?

Thanks as usual!

I can not see the tables you are referring to. Do you mean sections of text i.e. elements or am I on the wrong page.

I may be using the wrong terminology as well, and maybe even the wrong HTML. On my home page I have a section called "Following Is A Sample Of Our Quality Products". I entered the images you see in this section using the Table HTML. I added and element to my Home Page, and then entered the Table HTML in that element. This is the first time I have tried to use a table. When you look at the titles of these images the titles on the first row are in a different font than the second row. I cannot figure out why this happened and was hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction.

Hi Dave,

You first defined the font as Ariel and then you closed it down with </font> after each alt tag so, except for the first one, which was still operating under the original command, they all reverted back to your default font of Times New Roman. I have taken out all the extra </font> and also removed the H1 tag from your title because it wasn't around keyword. Here it is. It should work.

<DIV STYLE="margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px"><FONT FACE="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" SIZE="2"><center><font size=3>Following Is A Sample Of Our Quality Products</center>
<table width="100%" >
<tr valign="top">
<td>

<p align="center"><font size="2">Bird Houses (/site/990872/page/530622)</p></td></font>
<td>

</tr>
</table>

OK - I printed this off and had to really look at it to understand what happened. I guess where I was having problems was finding the original font face. I did not see the Ariel font anywhere and that is why I was so confused. Now I undestand and will make these changes. Thanks - this was a great lesson.

On the H1 tag comment - just to undestand. You are saying that H1 tags should (or can) only be used around a key word or a key word phrase?

One last comment. I have told a few people about the forum. I am presuming that it is OK to do that? Or is there some formal process that needs to be followed?

You are most welcome! :D You defined Ariel at the beginning of your table before your title. But you disengaged it with the </font>

(Edited by Sho)That's is correct. (Apparently that is NOT correct and there are times when you can use H1 tags with phrases that are not keywords) Search engines are looking for keywords and give more weight if they are in <h1> tags. If it isn't a keyword there is no reason for an <h1> tag. You can accomplish the same thing by just using <font size=4> (as you did) for your title.

There are published guidelines for members. This is a forum for SOL website owners. They must register to post. Guests are allowed but cannot post. We had some problems in the last forum with porn posts.

The two sites I told about the forum were StoresOnline sites, so I am OK there.

Also - lesson learned - and perhaps others can gain some knowledge from this. When I was looking for the font text to see why I had two different fonts, I was looking at the HTML I had entered on my SOL page element. I now realize that I had to actually go back and view my source code to see what the font type was, and that it was clearly indicated! I still would have needed your help to follow the "font trail" but this gives me some new insight into maneuvering and analyzing the data I have on my site and how it all comes together.

Thanks so much! :D

I didn't see anything wrong with your table and the header before it - all fonts appeared the same to me. The last line of the paragraph above that section appears in a different font though - perhaps that's what you meant.

In that paragraph you have some mis-matched and missing HTML tags. Here is the corrected code for what I think you wanted there:

<DIV STYLE="margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px">
<FONT FACE="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" SIZE="2">
<H1><center><font size=3>An Outstanding Selection of Products</font></center></H1>
We have one of the widest assortment of Bird Feeders, (http://www.storesonline.com/site/990872/page/541272) <font color="#0066CC">Tube Feeders, (http://www.storesonline.com/site/990872/page/530654) Squirrel Proof Feeders, (http://www.storesonline.com/site/990872/page/530653) Decorative Bird Feeders (http://www.storesonline.com/site/990872/page/531675)</font> and <font color="#0066CC">Hopper Feeders (http://www.storesonline.com/site/990872/page/531314)</font> for you to choose from. And, we have some of the best <font color="#0066CC">Accessories (http://www.storesonline.com/site/990872/page/530667)</font> and <font color="#0066CC">Bird Baths (http://www.storesonline.com/site/990872/page/531676)</font> available to display, view and enjoy your back yard products.

We also offer one of the widest selections of <font color="#0066CC">Bird Houses, (http://www.storesonline.com/site/990872/page/530622) Decorative Bird Houses, (http://www.storesonline.com/site/990872/page/530664) Distinctive Bird Houses (http://www.storesonline.com/site/990872/page/530639)</font> and <font color="#0066CC">Purple Martin Houses (http://www.storesonline.com/site/990872/page/536414)</font>to meet the individual tastes and needs of our customers.</FONT></DIV>

when you use nested HTML tags, they must be closed in the reverse order they were opened, otherwise odd things can happen with the display.

e.g. <font ...><a ...> must be closed in the following order </a></font>

And for future reference, there are only a few ways to set the display font variations:
1) in between <font>...</font> tags
2) using CSS styles - either inline, via styles defined within your HTML page using the <style>...</style> tags, or via an external linked stylesheet.

Any text on the page not styled by one of those methods will adopt the default font settings from the users browser preferences.

First, apologies for replying to you as Christine. I am really brain dead today.

But - YEAH - the changes you suggested worked and now the fonts look great!

AWESOME!!!

Camera Plus, He had <font =ariel> and then he closed it with </font> Ariel is not his default font. He did not redefine it so it reverted to Times New Roman.

It works now and it didn't work before -- a great test of whether or not something is wrong!

Thanks so much for taking the time to look at the codes in the preceding paragraphs. I will look at your suggestions today and study them so I understand what I did wrong, and then make the changes. Also thanks for the tip on closing HTML tags.

I think it is just awesome that you gave me some of your time today. Thanks to you, Shoshana and Christine - your time is REALLY appreciated!

Oops - musta missed that one - the table code and fonts appeared ok/the same for me - perhaps it's my browser settings.

My earlier post was about the paragraph before the table where I did find some mis-matched <font> and <a> tags which caused the font to change unexpectedly in that paragraph.

Camera plus, I think by the time you looked, it was already fixed. Shoshana was fast at finding the error, and Dave was fast at correcting it.

Yeah, sometimes the timing on email or chat can throw things off. But I do appreciate your looking at the prior paragraph and suggesting some changes! I will get to those later today.

HI Dave

I like you product (birdhouse) your website looking good but I notices samething wrong with your home page. The rigtside table does not line up like your other product page it could be cause by a table be to big.

Dave he's right and I believe the problem is your 4 across images. Could you do three across, and add one more to make 9? You would have 3 rows of three and that would look good.

Also, if you click 'feature' on some of your bird feeders, they will show up in that right bar and it won't look so blank. You don't have to put them on sale. Just the feature box will do it.

Funny you should mention that. I asked SOL today about that and they said the margins cannot be changed. They suggested changing the size of the table to bring everything in to line. I agree with you and it needs to get fixed. But thanks for the comment - it reinforces that I need to fix this!
