View Full Version : Link Directory 'depth'

Hi folks;
Here's an email I received from a webmaster - he's replying to a Link exchange request from me....
Thank you for adding our link. Two things I need to mention at this point.
One, we don't currently have a "links" page. We will; because I do realize
the benefit of reciprocal traffic as well as the value of search engine
optimization. That being said brings me to my second point. Links really
only help in search optimization if they are no more than two directories
away from the index page. Your links page appears to be 4 directories deep.
This is less than ideal for a links page and not one I'd be compelled to
participate in.
Anyone know what this is all about????
Thanks in advance

Basically he thinks he knows what he is on about, but as is often the case they are wrong.
A link partners link should be accessible within 2 or 3 clicks of the home page.
1. a link to the main directory page from the home page
2. a list of all link pages in the directory, not mutilple sub pages.
Hope this helps

well, since one shouldn't have more than 50 links on one page, one might end up with more pages, that's why some "sly link trade foxes" work a bit on their own link trade by adding an "A" or something like that on the right place - that way - regardless how many folders/pages exist - The mostly sorted by Alphabet links make the "A" very helpful at times . Some "learned" me (like some of the older Texans would say) and before some of our present teachers frown - "taught me" is correct

Don't always be fooled by the alphabet thing - I've discovered I'd rather be under C for clocks than a or B for Buy the Clocks - because that's where people will look for a clock. When I'm trading and want to be found by the wedding area for my wedding pinatas, my title begins with W. Lots of play can be done here - and if you have all your links pages listed on the main one - which is in your footer - you are only 3 pages away from the home page on all pages.

Lona,
You have followed the guidelines as far as what Christine had posted. I only see one subcategory "Health Books and Reports" has a sub of "health reports". Maybe you want to move this out and make it into a separate category.
About the 4 directories deep thing....me thinks that person looked at the address bar for the links directory. It read "http://storesonline.com/members/990617/links/index.html". So counting members, 990617, and links, it was determined you buried the link pages which is completely untrue :!: You have a link to it from every page of your site because you have the link in the footer.
The only other suggestion I have is to make your directory read your domain name, rather than storesonline.com as some partners insist the link point from the domain requesting the link.

Thank you ALL for your input.
Jason, when you said:

I can't see where, in Zeus that I would change that info to my domain name. This is what I have under Tools/Options/Website/ Link page URL address: http://www.makescense.com/site/990617/links/index.html

I guess you've done it right Lona. I see why your directory went to storesonline.com as I said earlier. Its your footer! Your Zeus settings are correct though.
Change the link in the footer to http://www.makescense.com/links/index.html and you're all set.[/img]
