Hi there,

Couple of questions please. I seem to get quite alot of mailer daemon emails on the requests I send out with LA. Why?? I have it set to send to webmaster. Should I change that?

Also, When I am checking out the website to see if I want to exchange I sometimes get this page cannot be displayed. Does that mean they have that type of email blocked?

And WHY does LA lock up so often??
thanks

there is nothing you can do about it. Known e-mail addresses - as "webmaster@..." are an easy target for spammers.

Also, When I am checking out the website to see if I want to exchange I sometimes get this page cannot be displayed. Does that mean they have that type of email blocked?

You mean, when you have LA open and go from there in the webbrowser?
Yes, that happens sometimes - but has nothing to do with an e-mail blocker - The webbrowser in LA is doing that - When it happens try a refresh and it goes away - Most of the time.

And WHY does LA lock up so often??
thanks

1. LA is using a lot of resources - so it can depend on your amount of RAM.
Do me a favor - write about both problems to and he'll help you.

To make another suggestion- if you can't find an address on the website to use to send - it probably isn't worth sending one to them.

I never guess or make up an email. If LA doesn't pull up a good email - and even if they do, when I check the website to see if it's one I want to link with - I check what they have for an email address and correct it before emailing.

Just as I have customized all my letters - and I have more than one letter template for sending requests out.

Thanks, all makes sense. I did change my email template to. I found it too hard and time consuming to try to put their links on my page first.

Thanks

Whoever you are - if you don't add the links first, you'll probably get many less who link back to you - personally, I rarely even finish reading link requests I receive that ask me to link first - then they will add me - I expect them to give me the courtesy of linking first, and I do the same for the people I request links of.

Beth is right !

You might have heard and read about "organic" growing links.
So, when you go ahead - think, what a visitor to your store might be interested in and offer him links, where he can find it, than not only the visitor, but the SE as well value your store accordingly.

Good points. I was just having trouble trying to copy and paste. I just get the address. I am not using LA's link pages. I am going to use mine that I have set up. I am sure Matt that you have covered this somewhere and I will try to find it.

By the way Beth, this is Alice. When I clicked on new subject I came up as quest and didn't notice that till it was posted.

Sorry bout that.

Alice, for the pages, you have to go to where they are saved on your computer - open the page - right click to view source - there is the code you need to copy and paste your links.

The only part in the template after your link exchange info - is the coding to get them to those pages. If you want to copy and paste them - you dont need any of that coding to show - so all is good.

Thanks Beth,
I knew you were using your own pages too.
I will try that.

Have a good one.

Hi Beth and Alice,

Am I understanding this right. If you have a links page already made that you are comfortable with, you can use LA to find link partners and then transfer the info to your existing link page instead of making a links page thru LA.

Barb,

If you look at my stores, I'm using LA, but I move the links onto my pages by cutting and pasting.

And if you use LA - you can move all your existing links onto it - so they get alphabetized right with the rest, in the categories, etc.

You have the option of whether you want to follow the ftp route - or do like I did (and Alice did) and put them on ourselves.

LA still generates the links for me - I just put them on my pages.

MAILER DAENON is for when an email address is incorrect and the email has been rejected.

This occurs when the email address is not set up right or the web site has closed.

I have my own links pages on the quilt site that I modeled after the Zeus link pages because I liked the way they looked and worked.

Am I understanding right, you can use LA to find potential links for you, after you review the site, if you wish to exchange links you copy the link info from their site and paste it into an element on the correct link page of your store?

You still make sure you keep all of the info saved on LA so you can keep track of reciprocal links.

I am reading all of Matt's wonderful posts and the tutorials from the LA site but it takes me a while and I would like to get some more links while i am still trying to figure out how to do everything I am reading.

Barb, You could do that - but what I do is let LA create the pages by categories - then I copy and paste the entire page into the element on my stores. So, ALL my links are in the program - I imported the ones I had done myself - and LA alphabetizes the links, etc - when I add new partners, I just click to generate new link pages - but instead of my uploading them via ftp, I chose to individually copy and paste the pages.

Now, what I think you're saying - is could you copy and paste the individual link into your store after they find them - yes - you would have to generate the pages, view source on them, then you would just add the ones you added - via copy and paste. It would be more time consuming if you have multiple links to add - but if you had one or two - probably wouldn't be much work

Hope I read your question correctly!

Beth, thank you. So each time you add a new link partner you delete the info you have in the element and copy and paste the new page in, then publish.
So, I should continue to work on my Create new Links page template so I can get my category pages made.
I can see where copy & paste from the sites would be a lot of work if you were fortunate enough to get a lost of links.
Thanks agein

I can see where copy & paste from the sites would be a lot of work if you were fortunate enough to get a lost of links.

This would take one right click (copy) a control A (highlight) and another right click (paste). What would be time consuming in that unless I'm missing something.

She is editing her links page, not redoing it.

I was talking about if she wanted to use her existing links pages - then use LA to find links - then have to find the individual link within the generated page - and only copy it into the page on the site.

This is sounding so confusing - but the way I do it, like you, Sho, is replace the page - click, click, click, done.

Hi Shoshana,
Sorry you crashed and lost Zeus.

I had wondered if you did a copy and paste from each individual site if you wanted to use your existing link pages. I did not realize you still generated your pages with LA and then copied the entire page into an element. I think I am understanding what Beth told me.

I have just finished the Codepage changes Matt had listed and am ready to create my links page and see if I did it right.

Barb,
You do NOT have to do it the copy and paste way - you can upload them, as Matt explains, via FTP - the copy and paste method is just another way to do it.

Beth,

I thought I would like to try the copy and paste for now. I did not feel as if I could take on trying to learn FTP right now too.

When I tried to create my links page just now it did not work and it hi-lited my email address. When I went back into Edit project and clicked the button it replaced my actual email address that i had entered with quiltedsplendor@domainsbyproxy.com. Is this the one I should be using on my codepage?

 I'm really hitting the forum tonight. I think I should dump L4t asap. I do have more than 90 links and I've tried to be careful with who I link with. Now, I need to make a decision on who to go with next. Link Assistant looks more friendly to me than Zeus. I'm not marketing international for the books (publisher won't ship abroad). Some suggest another link page. Do any of you have an example? I could call it Rainbow Links. Anyway, to get some more links, can we get a list of all those active in the forum through the member list, see who's relevant, and ask them if they want to link? Is this against the forum rules? You see my products are probably going to relate to most of the sites I see here so far. Anyway, what do you think?

You can post a request to trade links with everyone here. I suggest in the request that you post your linking info so that they have it and then give them where to send you the info for you to add them. Do that in the general link trading room.

I used to have l4T and my own links - but now I only have LA (done my own way) - you can feel free to look at my stores and how I set the links pages up. I love LA if you decide to go this way and will help you with it if needed.

I have just finished my link pages on the quilt site. I am using my own link page with subpages. Would you please look at it and tell me if it is acceptable the way I have set it up. I would like to make any needed changes before I start to send emails or start on my other site.

Thank you for your input.

Barb,

You've done a great job.

Since you are doing it my way - there is a little more customization you can do if you want. On the template, if you remove a couple things - they won't show up on your page - I've removed the part that gives this:

Links > Baby Products

Since you already have that at the top of the page - you don't need what LA generates - but it's not important and doesn't hurt.

I do suggest that you remove the part that gives the

Previous :: :: Next as you'll never use those.

You've done a great job - and all on your own. Pat yourself on the back! Get yourself a glass of wine! Put your feet up! And start getting lots of links!!!
